Shakti is proud and honoured to have the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, HELEN CLARK, as our Patron. She has known Shakti from inception and has been supportive of the work we do within New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities as well as the global cause of women working against violence. Helen Clark is currently the head of UNDP, at the United Nations, New York.

SETAC Ltd

Shakti Education Training & Advisory Company (SETAC) is the NZQA approved training and educational arm of Shakti, established to provide employment oriented courses and training for migrants to suit the New Zealand labour market and facilitate their employment and integration within the wider community.

In May 2009, SETAC launched a new project, Second Chance a holistic and comprehensive training programme for women who are dependent on state welfare on account of language and cultural barriers, lack of confidence or due to the trauma of abuse. Our objective is to reduce and ultimately eliminate dependency on social welfare by facilitating self-empowerment, develop confidence, self-esteem and life skills towards enabling their employment and integration within the New Zealand workforce and society. The Programme offeres a free 12 week life skills course including English for everyday living, nutrition and health, counselling & therapy, managing your finance, driver licensing, positive parenting, career development, etc.

Though a limited liability company SETAC will run the Second Chance programme on a non-profit basis.

PROGRAMME COMPONENTS: This holistic programme is being offered free of charge to Shakti's women's survivors of violence and will be run by qualified, skilled and trained professionals in respective fields. Topics covered include English Language, Counselling & Art Therapy, Health & Nutrition, Finance and Budgeting, Positive Parenting, Learner & Driver Licensing, Sustainable Living, Career Development through further study & Job-Seeking. The physical location for running this programme is 153, Rathgar Road, Henderson which also offers students residential accommodation during the course duration (12 weeks).

The programme has various levels of learning and students will be initially assessed by trained staff and with the mutual agreement of student, recommendations will be made for enrolment. After one year of completion of the project programme, SETAC intends to fine-tune the programme and seek NZQA accreditation.
